One-Handed and Two-Handed Horizontal Pushing Strengths and the Foot Space Requirements in Different Exertion Heights

Push activities are very prevalent in various industrial tasks. To avoid the injuries or muscular skeletal disorders by push activities with overexertion in industries and to redesign the tasks, the knowledge of the capabilities of push strengths are important reference. The purpose of this study is to measure and investigate the pushing exertion values and the required foot space under different exertion heights for labors in Taiwan. A three-factor factorial experimental design with two repetitions was conducted in this study. The three factors included gender (male, female), exertion height (40 cm, 80 cm, 120 cm, 160 cm), and hand posture (right hand, left hand, both hands). The results showed that the effects of three factors were significant on pushing exertion values and on step length, while gender and exertion height effect were significant on rear foot distance. These results could be important references for improvement and redesign of the push activities in industries. The consistency between the previous studies and this study was also discussed.
