On May 23rd, 2011, I was at Lake Lungluantan in Pingtung County searching for a Black Bittern (Dupetor flavicollis) that was reported previous day by Kaohsiung Wild Bird Society. Unable to find the Yellow Bittern by late morning, I moved to a nearby fish pond looking for some local species. At this time, I suddenly noticed through my binoculars a big raptor flying from south to north. It had wide wingspan with white belly and tail. I took 20 more pictures during this sighting and was able to observe it dived and caught an unknown prey before it flew away to the north. By checking the photographs, I identified it as an immature White-bellied Sea Eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster). This sighting is the second record of White-bellied Sea Eagle in Taiwan. The first record was from Lanyu Island in 1988, so this record is the first record in Taiwan Island.
