The management of set-net fishery has been questioned for a long time both by the scientific community and the fishing industry in Taiwan. Professional fishermen have pointed out that changes in fishing practices influences catch rates, and therefore the scientific assessment of set-net fishery (based on log-book analysis is necessary). This study, with extensive interviews with Taiwanese set-net fishermen, documents fishermen's experience and perspectives to provide a more informed analysis of logbook information in assessing set-net fishery. Through ”SWOT” and ”TOWS” analysis of set-net fishery in Taiwan, the building up of a set-net fishing industry has in many ways made a positive contribution for developing the coastal society in spite of the challenges. The closer cooperation among set-net fishing, cage culture, recreational fisheries and cultivation and management of marine resources are continuously developing.
