An Investigation into University Students' English Reading Motivation

大學生英語閱讀動機探究-以泛閱讀活動為例

摘要


學習動機是學習行為過程中一個極重要的因素,強烈的學習動機會提升學習的成效,語言學習亦若是。本研究藉由泛閱讀活動來探討學生英文閱讀的動機。研究工具乃採Hsu, Tsai, and Chang(2008)等人所編製的問卷,內容包含內在動機與外在動機兩大面向。內在動機以Keller(1987a,1987b)ARCS動機模式為基礎,調查學生參與英文泛閱讀活動的學習動機;外在動機則以學生在閱讀活動中所受到的外在刺激為主。100位技職體系大學生參與問卷的填答,去除無效答卷後,實際進入研究分析者共有87位學生。結果顯示:學生們的語言程度、專業主修差異、目前的參與狀況、及未來參與意願等方面均呈現顯著的差異;最後據此提出未來利用泛閱讀活動提升學生閱讀動機時可加以改進之執行方式。

One should never under-emphasize the influence of learning motivation in a person's language learning process. Strong motivation enhances the language learning efficiency. This study explores the reading motivation of university students through their participation in an extensive reading program. The research instrument is a questionnaire designed by Hsu, Tsai, and Chang (2008). Participants are 100 students but only 87 students' responses are finally analyzed after discarding the invalid ones. The results show significant differences in students' language proficiency, majors, current participation status, and future participation possibility. A recommendation is later provided for future implementation of extensive reading activities.
