The progeny of Pingpu try to throw off their given identity as the Han people and to re-construct their own identity as indigenous in the present. But the problem is that the Pingpu continue to be excluded from the pan-indigenous movement which is making its own uncertain identity. In addition, this paper will discuss the relationship between different ethnic groups in modern society. First of all, ”Negritude” will be reflected to illuminate the shortcomings of ”pan-indigenous” discourse(s). From there, it will employ Homi Bhabha's notion of ”hybridity” to explore inner contradictions in Pingpu's self-construction of identity-including a belief in essentialism and elements of binary opposition. The main issue is to break down the way in which the single logic of identity making infuses Pingpu constructions.
