E-gemological identification using a smart-phone: Determining whether colored powder has been used to enhance the color of jadeite?

Recently, a new treatment that using color powder to enhance the color was used on jadeite. This treatment was temporary, and still did not have the certain method to check. Therefore, some gemologists provides that we could use naked eye, loupe and microscope for identification. Though the clues of ＂spiderweb＂ and ＂stained spots＂, we will know whether it dyed or not (Chang, 2006; Yuan, 2013). This study used a portable instrument that included a smart-phone and a special lens, to explore the above view. The results show: 1. Natural jadeites may have the same graphs in bright-field illumination, just like the dyed jadeite. 2. Natural and dyed jadeites under different styles illumination appear different situation. Therefore, if we want to use ＂spiderweb＂ and ＂stained spots＂ as the features of dyed jadeites, observer have to consider the issue about different styles illumination.
