Outside Our Hometowns: The Participation Experiences and Reflection of Volunteer Tourists

摘要

全球化的影響衝擊著各領域，跨越原生地前往不同國度、接觸不同文化、重新認識世界，成為許多年輕人的夢想實踐之旅。繼背包客與打工度假，志工旅遊亦成為近年的新興議題，海外服務是為服務還是為出國體驗？志工旅遊是做公益還是去旅行？而服務是為了幫助他人，或是在他人的苦難中成就自己？以往許多國外研究關注於參與者的動機與利益，或是從生態保育及社會服務的視角來探索志工的角色與功能，且多以質性途徑，於田野間進行訪談與觀察，疊和次級資料，分析背後隱含的意義；而國內僅有數篇以學生或NGO團體為對象，缺少以個人方式從事志工旅遊之經驗探究。本研究以個人為對象，深度訪談5位受訪者，輔以網路部落格文章21篇及書籍1本，瞭解參與者過程中對公益體驗的感受與行程結束後對自我及他者價值的認知。歸納並分類出個人志工旅遊的感受，以深入探討在利他與利己的動機驅使下，過程的何種經驗影響了參與者價值與意念的改變，並重新建構與詮釋此「新型態旅遊」的意義。

Globalization has influenced numerous fields. Travel in foreign countries, exposure to various cultures, and global philosophical reinterpretations have become aspirations for many young people. Recently, volunteer tourism has become a novel concept for young adults after they have backpacked and experienced working holidays. Do people perform overseas volunteer work to provide a service or to obtain travel experience? Do volunteer tourists travel for public welfare or for traveling purposes? Do people conduct services to aid others or to feel self-fulfilled by helping others in need? Numerous foreign studies have focused on participant motivation and interests or have explored volunteer roles and functions from ecological conservation and social service perspectives. Additionally, qualitative methods have been primarily used to conduct field interviews and observations. Secondary data have been complied to analyze the implications. However, few relevant studies have been conducted in Taiwan. Therefore, we conducted qualitative interviews with individual volunteer. Data were collected from the in-depth interview with 5 persons, in another hand, 21 purposive blog and 1 book were also collected to enhance the result of this study. This study were considered to gain insight on participant motivations before departure, their reflections on public welfare experiences during the volunteer process, and their cognition regarding self-value and the value of other people after returning from their journeys. In addition, the study to obtain an understanding of the influence that travel volunteer work had on participant values and whether their motivations are selfish or altruistic. Subsequently, the significance of this novel type of tourism can be reconstructed and interpreted.
