"Her tears were much nobler than my sympathy": Exploring Xiao Hung's Art of Leaving Blank Room And Natural Aesthetic Through A Critical Reading of "Hands".

Xiao Hong has been long famous for her free-hand drawing works that do not give too many details about the subjects. "Hands," a realist novel, is thus quite special to her other writings. Focusing on this novel's sketch of the figures and the author's narrative angle, this article attempts to explore the author's mental characteristics, reflected in this novel, and what is in common between this novel and the author's other writings—which makes Xiao Hong unique to herself. One of Xiao Hong's important features—leaving blank room—may be recognized in this novel's figure sketch. The author barely adds into the story any of the author's judgment and points of view. Instead, the author merely represents Yaming Wang's shapes, weaker and weaker, suggesting Wang is losing her mental strength. The author has never said anything for Yaming Wang but merely uses Yaming Wang's state of ill-being to reflect how harsh and inhuman Yaming Wang's school and her classmates are. As to the narrative angle, the author tells the story from a bystander's perspective. As such, the author leaves a blank room that enables the author's description and readers' imagination to be remained with the reader's thoughts and feelings. Never expressing her point of view, the author keeps a room that allows the story to develop in ways of its own. With her fine-tuned instinct and dedication to art, Xiao Hong thus created an outstanding leftist literature work.
