Using Focus Group Interviews to Explore Primary Preventions in Mental Health Experiences During the Years 2020 ~ 2022 COVID-19 Pandemic in a University: Perspectives From Student Affairs Practitioners

This case study used three focus group interviews to explore primary preventions in mental health experiences during the Coronavirus Disease-2019 Pandemic (from February 2020 to June 2022) in a university. Research questions include: A. What external factors did college students feel anxious about during the pandemic? B. What pressures and challenges did student affairs practitioners encounter in primary prevention in mental health? and C. How to assist students in positive learning and growth during the pandemic? This study found that the psychological pressure of university students varies in different outbreak periods. The sources of stress of university students included confusion with online information, accommodation and pandemic isolation, online courses learning experiences, interaction between professors and students, and conflicting views on the pandemic with peers; in addition, there are uncertain extracurricular activities, family relationship, internship courses, and prospects after graduation. On the other hand, the pressures and challenges of student affairs practitioners included the ever-changing pandemic prevention policies, attitudes of professors and colleagues towards the pandemic prevention work and students, the infection status, false online information, unfamiliar students, how to assist students in changing learning methods, and how to adjust to being on call almost twenty-four-seven. Furthermore, international studies have found that about 40% of college students have psychological symptoms in the pandemic; however, due to the unique development of the pandemic in Taiwan, the pandemic has truly impacted all universities in Taiwan since late April 2022. This case school is the only university that has been affected by the pandemic since 2020; the student affairs practitioners shared their experiences with other universities.
