The author transferred from being a hematologist to employment as an emergency physician in 1990. Over the last 20+ years, in addition to first line clinical practice, the author has also held administrative positions in a major medical center, regional hospitals and district hospitals. At the same time, he has established non-profit organizations with various different goals, been a member of various committees, acted as a consultant to central and local governments on various issues, taught in schools and social groups, etc. No matter of which branch or cross-organizational work was being carried out, everything was based on the goal of developing critical and emergency medicine from a patient-centered point of view. This article reviews the author's past, shares his experiences and presents his idea to the readers. The article also presents the author's opinions and his thoughts on the future development of the emergency medicine in Taiwan. The wish is to arouse a response from his emergency medical peers so that a more suitable, friendlier, more attractive working environment may be created that makes medical staffs more willing to invest greater effort in the emergency medicine.
