A sustainable management of marine capture fisheries for the prevention of their decline: basic on line informative and educational resources

並列摘要

The paper presents documents that deal with how several human activities, and poor management of fisheries in particular, are affecting negatively the marine environment and leading to a decline in the fish harvest. Many informative and educational resources quoted in this paper explain how a proper management of marine resources results in a better functioning ecosystem that, in turn, may allow fishers to get a sustainable yield. Such resources consist of text, graphs, videos, animations, images, and educational stories in comic book format; they may be used with the method felt as most appropriate by teachers interested in teaching this subject. The quick post-war growth of global marine fisheries has lead to an overcapacity of the fishing fleets, that now compete for limited fishery resources. Marine protected areas allow undisturbed fish populations to grow and replenish the surrounding fished stocks. In addition, such protected areas may act as genetic reservoirs that have the potential to strengthen the resilience of the ecosystems, and counteract the trend toward the decrease in fish size induced by size-selective fishing. Some documents deal with the importance of preventing the disappearance of large old spawners because they ensure a strong offspring, that may often prove the most effective in the replenishment of fished stocks. Several documents deal with bycatch and ghost fishing, and provide information on the prevention and mitigation of the losses that they cause. Other papers analyze situations where increases of Jellyfish blooms have been observed, the relations that these have with human activities and fishing in particular, and the damages that they cause. Sustainable fish guides and ecolabels provide information about seafood originated from fishery operations that respect the marine environment.
