The paper discuses a concept of creating a collaborative community of learners of Japanese to promote learning of Japanese. The discussion is based on the new understanding of learning, a sociocultural approach. Here, learning is considered as a process of a learner's engagement with more capable others and or with learning resources around them, that results in some change. The paper describes the approach and the practices using the approach in the context of teaching Japanese in Australia, then make suggestions that are applicable to the context in Taiwan.
