What It Means to Be Successful EFL Learners in a Military Context: A Sociocultural Perspective

摘要


With an increasing demand on English for the ROC Armed forces to fulfill various military operations and missions, it is critical to identify and provide English training to qualified military personnel efficiently and effectively. As learners play a key role in a learning process, this study aims to identify characteristics of proficient English as foreign language (EFL) learners in a military context. Twenty seven military personnel enrolled in an 18-week, intensive English program were selected as participants based on the result of a standardized English proficiency test and recommendation from superiors. Data collected for this study included classroom observation, focus group interview, questionnaire, and teaching/learning materials, such as textbooks, syllabi, student's writing samples, and student's test results. A "constant comparison approach" was used to analyze data in order to identify various factors that played roles in these learners' beliefs concerning English learning process, as well as how these factors interplayed to shape these learners' beliefs on foreign language learning. It is hoped that findings from this study can be used to (1) help military administrators identify and select candidates to be trained in English for various military purposes; (2) help instructors develop curriculum and assessment tools to support English learning in a military context; (3) develop specific English-for-military-purpose (EMP) programs, such as arms procurement, diplomacy, intelligence work, and international operation and rescue.

隨著國軍在軍事行動及任務上對英文的需求日增,及時發掘與提供各級軍事人員有效的英文訓練,在目前已成當務之急。由於學習者在學習過程中扮演著關緊要的角色,辨識軍中優秀的英文學習者之特質即成本研究的目的。參與本研究的27名現役軍人,在經過長官推薦以及標準化測驗的篩選後,加入一個為期18週的英文密集訓練班,其目的為提升其靈活運用英文的能力。本研究以課堂觀察、焦點小組訪談、問卷和教材作為蒐集資料的方法,所蒐集到的資料包括教科書、教學大綱、學生寫作樣本和測試結果等。研究者使用「經常性比較法」來分析資料,以找出在英文學習過程中,影響這些學員的英文學習信念之因素,以及這些因素如何形塑學員們對於英文學習的信念。研究者希望該研究的結果可用於以下三方面:(1)建立有效而快速的識別和挑選方式,以找出適當的學員,接受軍事英文訓練(2)幫助英文教師制定課程及評估工具,以支持軍事英文學習(3)針對不同的軍事目的,如武器採購、外交、情報工作及國際合作與救援等,擬定具體的軍事英文課程計畫。
