The Necessity of Nuclear Power Development in Taiwan- Used the Concept of STS Instruction to Explore the Issue

Nuclear power generation has been the focus of Taiwan's society. It is easy to obtain raw materials, a small amount raw materials can produce a lot of energy will not cause air pollution and so the advantages to attract people to develop nuclear power to replace the traditional thermal and other power generation. But it is still radioactive contamination of nuclear catastrophe, nuclear waste disposal and so fatal shortcomings and challenge, nuclear power will inevitably make people have concerns about the safety. Currently, many countries have the development and expansion of nuclear power generation capacity of the plan in the world now, such as China, India and Argentina. In addition, Finland has expressed support for the expansion of nuclear plants, Switzerland, through a referendum, against the elimination of nuclear power plants. People in Taiwan for the development of nuclear power generation is to present the differences between the views of the state, and there is no clear consensus. This article will use the concept of STS (Science, Technology, and Society) instruction to explore the issue of nuclear power generation. STS teaching is student-centered features, but also to the question as the central link of the environmental, social and cultural related issues, and issues of the necessity of nuclear power are vital and related to people in the society. STS education is universal, and therefore STS teaching is suitable for the subject to discuss. This article first be briefed on nuclear power, and then describes the scientific principles and technology processes. Then, this article compares nuclear power and the ratio of Taiwan's largest thermal power generating capacity, and explains its advantages and disadvantages. And then it lists all of negative and positive views on nuclear power, followed by STS based on the teaching goals and research ideas, to conduct discussions on the issue of nuclear power generation, structured to guide students to think, and make value judgments to clarify. Through exploring the concept of STS teaching on nuclear power generation inspires students to integrate science, technology and society concept in education, in addition students have to learn to correctly apply the decision-making and problem-solving skills, but also hope that the advantages and disadvantages on nuclear power and in-depth analyses of positive and negative views of the parties clarify the truth and the nature of nuclear power for people in Taiwan and contribute to related research in the field.
