This paper examines the relationship between baseball and Taiwanese national identity in Japanese colonial period (1895-1945). Over the last two decades or more, the issues of sport and nationalism have been widely debated, but there has been a lack of precision in terms of the types of nationalism involved and the precise ways in which they interact with sport. The baseball played a significant role to Taiwanese society, during the era of Japanese colonialism. This study reveals that, the Japanese colonial government had different sports policy during the different stages of colonialism. In terms of class, baseball was employed as a tool of distinction between Japanese and Taiwanese by Japanese government, in the early stage. Later, they made use of it as a mean of reducing ethnic conflicts and facilitating the Japanization of Taiwanese people. Although formally the Taiwanese people had adopted Japanese baseball culture, actually the Taiwanese themselves had germinated certain national identity of Taiwan through the game matches on baseball. In sum, national identity was ambivalent with Japanese and Taiwanese nationalities.
