The Effect of Slacklining on Balance Ability and Lower-Extremity Muscular Endurance in Junior High School Students

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of slacklining on balance ability and lower-extremity muscular endurance in junior high school students. There were 33 ninth graders randomly assigned to either experimental (18 students) or control groups (15 students). Only the experimental group underwent an eight-week slackline training program. The program was composed of 16 lessons (2 lessons per week). Each lesson lasted 45 minutes and warm-up time is excluded. The control group is not subjected to slackline training program. Subjects performed the static balance test (stand with the single foot and closing eyes), dynamic balance test (Star Excursion Balance Test, SEBT) and lower-extremity muscular endurance test (30-s chair-stand test) before and after training programs. The collected data were analyzed by independent one-way ANCOVA (SPSS Version 17.0). The results suggested that there were significant improvements in static balance and dynamic balance after an eight-week slackline training program, whereas there were no significant differences in the control group. However, there was no significant difference between experimental and control groups in lower-extremity muscular endurance. Research results shows that regular slackline training improved static balance and dynamic balance ability of junior high school students.
