Physiological and Psychosocial Health of Physical Activity among Adults with Mental Disabilities: Pilot Study 1

Obesity is an important worldwide public health problem and sedentary lifestyle has been associated with increasing rates of overweight and obesity. This descriptive presentation aims to study the relationship between psychosocial health, obesity and the lifestyle among the intellectual disabled. 40 participants were enrolled, 2 dropped out due to sick leaves during the field testing period. A total of 38 adults over the age of 18 with mild to moderate intellectual disability (ID) (20 males, 18 females), (N = 38, mean age 37.68, SD = 10.1), were recruited from three sheltered workshops (St. James Settlements, The Spastics Association of Hong Kong, and The Mental Health Association of Hong Kong). Pedometer step counts were recorded on 4 consecutive (week) days. BMI and waist circumstance were also recorded. Questionnaires regarding the adults' outcome expectation, perceived barriers to exercise and performance self efficacy on physical activity were examined. Results showed that adults with intellectual disability's mean of total daily step counts is 7432 steps (SD = 4073.95), the mean BMI is 27.17 (SD = 8.05), and the performance self efficacy towards physical activity (Mean = .87, SD = .61) is low. It is concluded that both physiological and psychosocial health among adults with intellectual disability towards physical activity are low and more physical activity is needed.
