Emulating the Surroundings: Indigenous Environs as the Source of Malay Dance

The Malay concept of Alam Melayu (Malay World) embodies the physical and emotional landscapes in the Malay dance culture. Alam as the purveyor of artistic knowledge becomes the ultimate source of creating and interpreting the aesthetics and semiotics in Malay dance where the codified symbols of stylized dance movements are transferred as text from one generation to the other through memories of oral literature or deciphered from written manuscript. Both oral and written literatures are crucial narratives that continue to provide the source of knowledge for the artistic and creative interpretation of indigenous environments, which resonates in sourcing dance styles. Two traditional dance genres, Zapin and Inang, are highlighted through the micro-kinetics of preferred dance motifs and images that are derived from their immediate environs of the Malay world. A structural analysis of these two dances using Kaeppler's terminology and analytical approach explains the construction of each dance form according to ethno-semantic categories as a means to demonstrate the relationship between two Malay dances that are closely intertwined with the Malay people's stylistic affinity for the surrounding world, or Alam.
