Yuan Shih-k'ai was an influential figure in Chinese modern history with his successful official career and great contributions from as an important official in the late Qing Dynasty and as the the president of R. O. C. However, Yuan Shih-k'ai has been criticized and questioned for proclaiming himself emperor in his old age. From the perspectives of psychobiography, this paper focuses on the suspenseful problem in terms of 5 aspects: his revolutionary personality, identity crisis, Confucian coping style, the conservativeness of personality and some push hands in the monarchy.
