This psychobiographical study investigated the life of a renowned author, Lin Shu-Hwa, using gender and culture as the epistemological lenses. Born in 1900 to a gentry family in Beijing, Lin Shu-Hwa was the daughter of the third wife of a high-ranking Qing official. Growing up hearing her mother's endless sighs in a family where men were superior to women, Lin Shu-Hwa realized how women's worth was affected by their culture. Inspired by the ancient fantasy novel, Flowers in the Mirror, she planted the seed of pursuing a dream to attend the Imperial Examination as her father did. The modern education empowered Lin Shu-Hwa to leave her chamber and strike into modern society. With her distinct sharpness, insightfulness, and unique personal experiences, she gave prominence to the destiny of the marginalization of the subjectivity of the female characters in her novels under the rule of Chinese paternalism. Using Lin Shu-Hwa's life stories and biography as an exemplar, the current study aimed to explore and depict the awakening process and practices of gender consciousness, as well as the struggles of women in a time of transition from traditionality to modernity. The author hoped to enrich our understanding of women and their situatedness by placing Lin Shu- Hwa's life experience in the historical and sociocultural context of her era, and looks forward to enlightening modern women.
