A New Numerical Method for the Design of a Four-bar Linkage Mechanism

This paper presents a new approach to design a crankrocker four-bar linkage mechanism using a geometric classification and two-step optimization. Using the classification, a new numerical approach for the design of a four-bar linkage, which cannot obtain an unintended target trajectory shape, is presented. The optimization method consists of a two-step procedure. In the first step, the shape of the trajectory is obtained by minimizing the root mean square error (RMSE) of the first order derivative of the coupler curve. The size of the trajectory is then determined by minimizing the RMSE of the second order derivative of the coupler curve. This new approach has three advantages: i) it is possible to set the desired trajectory to a continuous and closed loop; ii) it can obtain the optimal solution without the possibility of generating an unintended shape; and iii) the method can consider the velocity of output for each section with a constant input velocity by adjusting the interval of peak point of the first and second order derivative values according to the input angle of the desired trajectory. Five case studies were conducted to verify the advantages of the new approach.
