An Exploratory Study of Entrepreneur's Social Capital: An Example of Information Software Industry

Recently, more and more researchers paid attention to the issues about entrepreneur's social capital. Researches also indicated that social capital is critical for entrepreneur's success (Uzzi & Dunlap, 2005). However, by reviewed previous researches in Sociology we found that the concept of social capital mainly refers to everybody's social capital in daily lives. In this study we call it "daily life social capital". Besides, previous studies indicated that not only daily life social capital but also work related social capital are critical for the entrepreneurial process. In this study we call it "entrepreneurial social capital". Based on the results of literature review, we found that most of scholars focused on daily life social capital. Less researches paid attention to the issue related to entrepreneurial social capital. Therefore, this exploratory study selected information software industry as example to understand entrepreneurial social capital. This paper employed two phases study. The first phase adopted case study. In this stage, seven IS (information software) entrepreneurs were interviewed in order to understand entrepreneur's social capital completely. Based on the results of the first phase, survey research is employed in the second stage. The subjects include IS entrepreneurs and IS staffs. The purpose of this phase is attempted to verify the viewpoint proposed by authors. The results indicated that there exists distinct differences between IS entrepreneurs and staffs in their entrepreneurial social capital. Although, their daily life social capital has no significant difference but all of the variables related to social capital, entrepreneurs are larger than those of IS staff. It means that entrepreneurs pay more attention to social capital than staff. The major contribution of this paper is that the concept of entrepreneurial social capital is understood advanced by this exploratory study. These results can be applied in the future researches.
