This article examines Jurgen Moltmann's "Theology of Hope" in its relation to Ernst Bloch's philosophical approach to the concept of hope. It will show the extent to which Moltmann's work was influenced by Bloch's philosophy. Hope as a theological category is examined within the contemporary context of Moltmann's book. His major decisions and moves are examined in relation to this theological and philosophical context, as well as to the context of our times. This paper concludes by arguing for a new theology of hope aimed at transforming societies in Europe and Asia.
