A Selective Review of the Effect of Self-Regulation Strategies on Response Inhibition in Children with ADHD

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common clinical disorder observed in children. The prevalence rate in school-age children is approximately 5-10% and inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity are core symptoms of ADHD. An underlying deficit in inhibitory control has been proposed to account for dysfunctional behaviors associated with this disorder. Furthermore, recent research has shown that the self-regulation strategy of implementation intentions is effective for improving inhibitory control in children with ADHD. This article, therefore, reviews research related to response inhibition in ADHD including behavioral and electrophysiological studies exploring the effect of self-regulation strategies on response inhibition of children with ADHD in experimental settings or in schools. This review is expected not only to provide clinical psychologists or teachers with an effective behavioral strategy for the treatment of children with ADHD from the perspective of behavioral treatment but also to provide future research with several possible factors that may influence the application of implementation intentions.
