The purpose of this study was to present the nursing experience receiving from taking care of a first time stroke patient with left-side hemiplegia. Eleven functional health patterns designed by Gordon was adopted to be an evaluation measure. Data has been collected through the following routes: providing direct care, face to face interview, observation, and physical assessment. Major problems were identified to including impairment of physical mobility, deficiency of self-care, risk of falling down, and feeling of hopelessness. During the period of providing care, patient was encouraged to verbally express inside feelings and to have rehabilitation as soon as possible; the degree of improvement on ADL scale has been also discussed with patient; patient´s confidence in self-efficacy was trying to be stronger by a few ways. Results of this case study show that decreasing recurrence of stroke should be attained by improving on daily activities function, enhancing the motivation to have rehabilitation, families and other patients´ encouragements, strengthen the positive learning effect, and living a healthy life style. This report expects to provide a preliminary outcome for care of the first time stroke patient in future.
