A study on general publics' attitude about Leave No Trace and mountaineering human waste disposal issues

The increasing population of mountaineering, hiking and camping have brought heavy burden on nature environment. For teaching general puclic the correct concepts and techniques to reduce environmental impact, the Taiwanese government have publicized the Leave No Trace campaign since 2006. However, are general public aware of LNT? Are they willing to practice the 7 principles of LNT? What's general publics' attitudes about mountaineering human waste disposal problems? All the above questions are not clearly realized. This study processed an online survey to realize the opinions and attitudes of general public who have engaged in recreation activities in mountain areas. The results indicated more than half of the respondents had aware of and understood LNT. Most respondents agreed that their mountaineering behaviors have qualified the 7 LNT principles when having activities in mountain areas. About the mountaineering human waste disposal problem, respondents mostly agree that seriously environment pollution may happen if human waste are not properly disposed. Respondents indicated the best method to solve human waste disposal problem is mountaineers should dig cat holes themselves, followed by mountaineers should packing human waste in and packing human waste out. In contrast, the government construct dry eco-toilets and common public toilets were relatively not strongly supported by respondents.
