Decolonizing God: Shifts in Biblical Interpretation and the Transformation of View of God

This paper explores how evolvement of biblical interpretative approaches throughout the history of Taiwanese indigenous peoples has shaped the development of indigenous theology. The first section indicates that development of biblical interpretation in recent decades has led to transformations of view of God. The second section briefly reviews how Western colonialists employed (interpretations of) the Bible to legitimate their domination of indigenous peoples and to justify their exploitation of the latter's lands. The focus of the third section is on the British missionary William Campbell and the Canadian missionary George L. Mackay. The fourth section traces the history of Taiwanese indigenous peoples after World War II. The fifth section turns the attention to the rise of ethnic self-determination movements within the Taiwanese indigenous peoples. The last section uses two examples of biblical interpretation to illustrate conversations between Taiwanese indigenous theology and biblical interpretation. As a conclusion, the paper proposes that in constructing a "decolonizing" view of God, one needs to integrate biblical interpretation and indigenous traditional culture and awareness. By employing different methods, the advancement of future indigenous theology will be possible.
