An Interdisciplinary Knowledge Content Management and Digital Museum Construction Model Based on Virtual and Physical Unification Approaches: A Case Study of the National Museum of Natural Science

Being responsible for creating and spreading knowledge, nowadays museums form the most important learning environment in the modern society. Contemporary museums are facing a variety of challenges, such as globalization, knowledge economy, rapid changes of information technology and internet, and transformation of people's life style and needs. For survival, museums have to construct interdisciplinary knowledge content and to reuse it for sustainably producing educational, academic and economical added-value services. This research proposes a framework for constructing a virtually-and-physically integrated digital museum and a sustainable service model based on unified knowledge content management. User-centered services between virtual and physical services are created via reusing the unified knowledge content to create online and onsite linking services. We share practical experiences of the National Museum of Nature Science in Phases I and II of National Digital Archive Project and give examples in the construction of the unified knowledge content management model and virtually-and-physically integrated digital museum. It is worthwhile to share our experiences and the integrated model we have developed in the past decade with those who are interested in our outcomes. We sincerely hope that these experiences can be referenced as a paradigm in the museum sector.
