The paper reviews the journal papers on local cultural museums in Taiwan, depicting the features of research issues and methodologies. The paper also summarizes the theoretical arguments of New Museology, Foucault's heterotopia discourse, Bennett's theory of exhibitionary complex and Bourdieu's theory of cultural capital and empirical research of taste stratification. Furthermore, the findings of a randomly sampled telephone survey on Taoyuan City's residents and statistical analysis are presented to examine the policy effects of local cultural museums and to explore the theoretical implications. The author hopes that a set of research agenda of local cultural museums and other cultural sites would be constructed by focusing on more sociocultural and sociological theories, research methods and engaging in more in-depth policy analyses.
