'The Postmodernity of Museums' Transfer of the Value Production and Significance of Artifacts: A Case Study of the National Palace Museum

We could hardly imagine that the artifacts that we see in the museum are replicas, given that the artifacts should carry the value of authenticity.. However, current (and future) technologies such as digital collection, virtual reality, image synthesis, network connection, as well as the curatorial approach of immersive theatre, the epidemic restriction of COVID-19, etc., have accelerated the presentation of artifacts in the form of virtual image text. Observes this phenomenon, and further studies the value and significance of artifacts, the flow and changes in the production process, and takes the National Palace Museum as an example study found that the value and significance of the artifacts of the National Palace Museum, its producers and production methods have been transferred in various stages, and the audience has personally experienced more important sources of artifacts' value and meaning. It also discusses the postmodernity characteristics of museums, and responds the future imagination to ICOM's new definition of museums. In observing such a phenomenon, this paper further studies the fluidity and changes of the production value as well as the significance of the artifacts. In taking the National Palace Museum as an example, we discover that the value and significance of artifacts in the Palace Museum shifted according to its producers and production methods in various stages. This shifting phenomenon reveals that the audience's personal experience is an essential source for the value and significance of the artifacts. With that findings, we further debate museums' postmodernity characteristics, responding to the future imagination of ICOM's new definition for museums.
