Confucian-Christian Identity and Comparative Theology

Following the recent increase in the discussion of multiple religious belonging and multiple religious identity in academia, interreligious dialogue has entered into another phase, a phase of the construction of self-religious identity. For this reason, other religions have become the elements of self-constructing religious identity. Therefore, this article will firstly discuss the distinction between multiple religious belonging and multiple religious identity. Then it will elucidate the phenomena of the dual religious identity of East Asian Christians and the historical transformation of the religious tradition. Finally, it will respond to the possibility of Confucian-Christian identity by using the theory of comparative theology, especially Robert C. Neville's idea of Boston Confucianism.
