The Origin and Duty of Political Theology in Modern Society: On Jürgen Moltmann's Der Gott im Projekt der modernen Weit

Jürgen Moltmann in his Der Gott im Projekt der modernen Weit raises his new-political theology from varies perspectives. As for the historical clue, he puts his concept into the tension between John Calvin and Thomas Hobbes. One stresses the publicity of theology and the other that a theology should give its service for commonwealth. Moltmann regards Carl Schmitt as the representative of Hobbes in the twentieth century, and Moltmann himself represents the side of Calvin. This paper also puts Moltmann's concept of political theology into the tension between Luther-Locke and Calvin-Hobbes. On the one hand the separation between religion and politics is the first principle of modem politics just like Luther-Locke stress; on the other hand, religion cannot be privatized and become a personal affair, it should keep its power to give its strong influence on secular world like Calvin-Hobbes did.
