《加拉太書》二章11-14節與奧古斯丁和杰羅姆的釋經辯論

Galatians 2:11-14 and the Exegetical Controversy between Augustine and Jerome

並列摘要

Regarding to the incident of Antioch described in Galatians 2:11-14, Eastern and Western Church Fathers had very different exegeses. Generally, the Eastern Church Fathers acquited Peter who was challenged by Paul on the ground of hypocrisy; meanwhile, the Western Church Fathers, except Jerome, admitted that Peter really made an error or sin and should be criticized publicly by Paul. Against this exegetical background, inheriting the Eastern interpretation (especially that of Origen), Jerome insisted that the conflict between Paul and Peter is "a pretended conflict" . Both temporarily pretended to abide by the law just because they feared the Jews. The Jewish law is harmful for the Christian faith and should not be abided anymore. However , inheriting the Western interpretation, Augus tine argued that the conflict was very real, i.e., Paul's public criticism was a true blame of Peter and not a lie . The Christian faith fulfilled the law, but as a "longstanding custom" , Jewish Christians can continue to abide by it, if not imposing it on Gentile Christians. This article analyzes the exegetical controversy over the incident of Antioch according to the correspondence between Augustine and Jerome, and then sheds light on their different theological presuppositions and purposes.
