About the Native and the Indian: Textual Positionings and Narrative Phenomena

This essay attempts to examine a number of textual positionings and narrative phenomena concerning the Native and the Indian within the scope of Native American literature and children's literature. The first section discusses the signifying practices of Native American literature together with its academic concerns. The second section uses the rhetorical writings of Zitkala-Sa and Sharon Creech's children's novel Walk Two Moons as examples of narrative deployments about the Native and the Indian. The third section engages a selection of classical as well as contemporary children's literature that addresses the presence of the Native and the Indian. The essay concludes with noteworthy narrative dilemmas facing the united efforts of Native/Indian literature and children's literature.
