An Initial Exploration of the Gushan Fish Market in Kaohsiung City during the Japanese Governance

The fishery has always been one of the important traditional industries around the Cihou and Takao areas. During the Japanese governance, the Japanese had engaged in the introduction of modern fishing tackles and powered fishing boats, followed by the consequent repairs of dock basins and the establishment of fish markets. At the time, a modern fishing harbor and two fish markets market had been constructed in Hamasen (哈瑪星). However, these facilities have rarely been addressed in the related literature. This study aims to take the modern fishing harbor and the two fish markets in Hamasen as the research subjects. Through a thorough review of the related publications and literature, this paper discusses the usage of Shinhamachō Ni-chōme (新濱町二丁目), the changes in the industrial forms, and the influence on the local industries and communities after the establishment of the fish markets.
