Huang Chuo's A Collection of Critical Note on Ching-tien-shih-wên 黃焯經典釋文彙校 is the most complete collection of variants and collations of previous scholars over the ages. It is to an important reference work for the study of the Ching-tien-shih-wen. However, it is to be regretted that Huang only paid attention to external evidence but neglected the internal evidence in which the Shih-wên 釋文 abounds. The purpose of this article is to show that by simply using the Shih-wên alone, a great many of the misprints and mistakes in the fan-ch'ieh 反切 spelling can be rectified. Up to now the author has found seventy-nine such items. Particular emphasis is placed on fan-ch'ieh spelling. The author's aim is to restore the original form of the Shih-wên. In the attempt, the author discovers that the most striking phenomenon is the interchange of shang 上 and ch'ü 去 tones, which is probably related to the change of tones from yang-shang 陽上 to ch'ü 去 Next comes the interchange of the words within the pairs of initials yü 於 and yü 于, fang 方 and fang 芳 (fei 非 and fu 敷). Besides, errors in characters appear frequently in the Shih-wên. The author has made an effort not only to correct errors but to explain, whenever possible, hoe these error came about.
