There are ten pieces of Cai sang zi under the authorship of Ouyang Xiu. Portraying the scenery of the West Lake in Yingzhou, they have won high praise and are regarded the masterpieces in ci of the Song dynasty. Nonetheless, there are controversies concerning when they were composed and whether they were composed in the same period. This paper discusses the background and the composition time of these ten pieces, applying the methodologies of both literary appreciation and textual analysis. It is concluded that they were composed by Ouyang Xiu at the age of sixty-one.
