Although different scholars have studied the Sanguo zhi 三國志, much of the research was based on its original text as a starting point to shed light on its meaning or to compare the different versions of the text. Little has been done to give an overview on how a particular book has cited the work. During the Tang dynasty, efforts have been made to compose the Qunshu zhiyao 群書治要 and four of its volumes (volumes 25-28) have quoted the Sanguo zhi. The primary version of the Sanguo zhi is, therefore, revealed in the four chapters of the Qunshu zhiyao. Having observed that not many studies have been carried out to discuss the format of the Qunshu zhiyao and the problems arisen in the process of citing the Sanguo zhi in the Qunshu zhiyao, the present study seeks to achieve three major purposes: (1) to make clarifications on the discrepancies found in different versions of the Qunshu zhiyao; (2) to make textual criticism on the extant versions of the Sanguo zhi with reference to the oldest version of the Qunshu zhiyao dated back to Japan's Kamakura 鎌倉 period, which was only published in 1989 and is thus rarely studied by scholars; and (3) to examine the Sanguo zhi in terms of its format and chapters' sequence, etc. Findings from the Qunshu zhiyao have helped identify errors in the transmitted versions of the Sanguo zhi, including the order of the Liezhuan 列傳 (biographies), cited wordings and format, etc. This proves the need of refining the current versions of the Sanguo zhi and the tremendous value of using the Qunshu zhiyao as a reference. Qunshu zhiyao preserves the originality in the Tang dynasty's work, and its version in the Kamakura period is particularly invaluable. Thus, a thorough examination on the citations in the Qunshu zhiyao and its format would contribute to the study of the Sanguo zhi.
