"Critique of the social contract," an important post-Republican era political article by Yan Fu, has attracted much attention from scholars. Most of the discussions, however, have failed to note that the article was a translation adapted from Thomas Huxley’s "On the natural inequality of men." Huxley wrote the article to discourage nationalization of land in Britain. To serve his own political agenda, however, Yan devoted a good deal of effort to translating it. Therefore, by including Huxley in his review, the author of this paper examines Yan's work from a new perspective. Huxley's "On the natural inequality of men" actually represents a series of public debates he had had with Herbert Spencer in The Times and other media. His Evolution and Ethics (also translated by Yan) was another product of this debate. To better understand the position that Huxley held in Yan's mind, it is important to revisit the dialogue between Huxley and Spencer.
