Vascular Plants of Da-tu Mountain

並列摘要

(1) Da-tu mountain which is of a terrace near the western coast of Taiwan has been cultivated for many years. It is 301 m in altitude, and its western slope is much steeper than the eastern one. (2) Under the conditions of destruction by human activity and flood erosion, the recorded vascular plants contain about 259 species, among which the woody plants are only 63, and all of them belong to the members of the hard-wood forest of the lower slope of Taiwan. (3) According to the factors of climate, soil and composition of woody plants, the region is a part of the western extensive area of the hard-wood forest. I suggest that the primary forest of Da-tu mountain belong to the tropical hard-wood forest, although it is a secondary plant community at the present time. (4) The aspect of the secondary succession occurring here especially in the open area of "stone river" is very conspicuous, The order of sucession is as follows: the first is rhizome geophytes and annual plants, the next is some semishrubs, which belong to the chamaephytes, and then Acacia confusa invades from both edges of Acacia forest. (5) Acacia confusa is a very dominant species in the region and also the secondary forest of Taiwan. It grows as big tree and often in small population in dense primary forest, but it becomes smaller tree and spreads widely and continuously at low land. This phenomenon may be explained by the fact that the biology or mechanism of seed germination of Acacia confusa is more adaptable or stronger than that of other trees in the damaged soil. However, the problem still needs further survey and experiment. (6) The geophytes, hemicryptophytes, chamaephytes and the therophytes depend on their life forms to protect the renewal buds or embryos, so that they can survive frequently and become successful groups on the cultivated land. And this is why the grasses show the highest value in both quantitative and qualitative characters of plant community of Da-tu mountain.
