Spatial distribution in the freshwater edible mussels Lamellidens marginalis has been studied in a fish pond located at Thakumagar, West Bengal, India. It is revealed that the juvenile mussels arc confined to the edge of the pond up to 60 cm water depths while the gravid individuals arc mostly restricted to around I m depth area of the pond. The aged individuals though very less in number arc disperssed to areas beyond I m depth but within 2.2 m water depth. There exists a strong correlation between the density of mussels and the amount of dissolved oxygen present in water. More the amount of dissolved oxygen in water higher is the number of L. marginalis. The areas of the pond confined within water depths 0-60 cm are preferred zone for embedment of juveniles while the gravid individuals have preference for the areas between 60.1 and 120 cm water depths.
