Saint Augustine's refutation of Pelagianism was a momentous and memorable defense of faith and doctrine in church history. The debate involved the doctrine of man, the doctrine of sin and the doctrine grace, which are at the core of the faith of the Catholic Church. Augustine fought against the heresy of humanism in Pelagian thought. He championed the irresistible nature of grace, the necessity of original sin, and the prior existence of predestination. Together, they forged the paradigm of grace for the Latin Church. Augustine's victory had far-reaching impact that can be traced from the Reformation to more recent times with the emergence of Semi-Pelagianism.
