Beginning from the Cao and Wei periods the concept of family status (mendi) followed the developments of the powerful warlord clans and became of great importance, reaching its maximum influence in the Eastern Jin. Compiled just after the Southern dynasty's Liu Song era, the Shishuo Xinyu reflects this historical cultural phenomenon in its stories. This paper begins with the consciousness of the strict criteria determining the relations of high and low; it covers the awareness of self-superiority in the families involved with the warlord clans, and how new awareness of family status was promoted, in order to give a synthetic analysis of how the Shishuo Xinyu expresses the concept of family status in its reflections of the behavior of prominent officials and literary figures. From this analysis, it is possible better to comprehend the mental disposition of literary gentlemen of the Wei and Jin era.
