Liang Shiqiu, Wen Yiduo and Aubrey Beardsley: With an Aside on the Views of Literary Arts of Chinese Students Studying Abroad in the United States in the 1920s

Liang Shiqiu and Wen Yiduo were both great masters in the history of Chinese contemporary literature. The former was a translator and essayist, while the latter was a poet and scholar. In academic work, it is rare to have the two of them juxtaposed for research. By referring to their friendship at the time they were coworkers, and through the acquaintance the two of them had with Aubrey Beardsley while exchanging views on art with him, this article evokes a different side of the authors and times as part of the history of literature. This article uses an empirical method of historical investigation drawing on clues from the English engraver Aubrey Beardsley, and from the authors' early poetry, collected correspondence, and late writings of reflections, memories and so forth; it brings to light a view of art that the writers had intentionally avoided, and actively or passively forgotten. In writing this article it is hoped that from the perspective of research into these writers, for the sake of the figures of Liang Shiqiu and Wen Yiduo in contemporary history of literature, thereby to enter into a more personalized plane. In another respect, from the 1920s when Liang Shiqiu and Wen Yiduo were studying abroad in the United States, the article aims to analyze their views of art in terms of the complex relations of art and times.
