A Study on Literariness and Folk Customs of Transformation Text on Mulian Rescuing His Mother from the Underworld

摘要

《佛說盂蘭盆經》提供目連救母故事架構，至唐代寺院俗講變文興盛，目連變文在基本架構之下豐富血肉，現今有三個不同系統故事流傳，為人所熟知。顯現俗講內容各有側重發展，再加上文人進行修飾痕跡，都可看到故事受歡迎與深入民心情形。論文從三方面進行討論，首先由敘說形式顯現目連變文為寺院俗講內容，說講之際配合圖像進行，以見目連變文並非一時一地一人之作。第二以俗文學討論目連變文的文學性。第三論及目連變文內容展現的民俗性以及抄寫變文加以運用形成的民俗性。

The basic framework of ＂The Buddha-spoken Ullambana Sutra＂ offered the story framework for Mulian Rescues His Mother and underlay the abundant connotation for Transformation Text on Mulian Rescuing His Mother from the Underworld when transformation texts on popular lectures by temples flourished during the Tang Dynasty. Today there are three different systematic stories circulating that have already been well known. It shows particular emphasis laid respectively on the development for contents of popular lectures, coupled with signs of literati's polishing, that sees the popularity of this well-known story. This essay conducted in three aspects. It starts with the narrative form to show that Transformation Text on Mulian Rescuing His Mother from the Underworld feature contents of popular lectures by temples. Lectures were given in an accompaniment of images, and it's thus evident that Transformation Text on Mulian Rescuing His Mother from the Underworld is not a branch of work knowledge about one time, one place or one person. The second part focuses on the application of folk literature to the discussion of the literariness of Transformation Text on Mulian Rescuing His Mother from the Underworld. The third aspect is about folk customs displayed by contents of Transformation Text on Mulian Rescuing His Mother from the Underworld and formed from the further application of transcribing transformation texts.
