The development of co-curricular activities gradually attracts the respects and attentions of educational scholars because of the impacts of current educational thoughts. They underscore the indifferences and importances as compared with normal curriculum, suggest it be regarded as an important part in school training programs. This thesis aims at explaining what the co-curricular activities is and how it is designed in order to give the school administrators, teachers, even parents an adequate concept and a guide school authority can abide by. Meantime, forwardly compare the practices of co-curricular activities of Taiwan with those of U.S.A., Britain, France, West Germany and Japan to raise some suggestions. Theory ideology and empirical research through questionnaires were used. All related papers, no matter foreign or domestic were comprehended. From this, I can understand what cocurricular activities is and how to work out a flowchart of planning, organizing and controlling the cocurriculum. Then, I mailed questionnaires to the sample, 76 chiefs being in handle of cocurriculum, 76 teachers, 2241 students, which were picked up from the junior high schools by stratifed random sampling. Next was to proceed the data analysis by using frequency distribution, percentage testing and X^2 test. Now summary the conclusions derived from the empirical research as follows: 1. Almost chiefs and students agree putting the cocurricular activities into the normal schedule and remunerating for teacher's paid by a hour. 2. Chiefs and teachers all agree that the purpose of cocurricular activities is to keep students easy from intensive, humdrum learning, promote sociability and increase the interests of learning. 3. Preparing for entrance examination always interrupts the proceeding of cocurricular activities, above all in the third degree. 4. The alternatives of cocurricular activities students have and the willingness teachers join were ignored by school authority. 5. The cocurriculum schedule is organized according to teacher specialty, not students' interests. 6. Each school is always concentrate on some few fields, like athletic activities. Scientific activities are put in schedule by only few schools because of lacking of money and equipments, and partly of being choosed by not enough students. 7. Co-curricular activities is always transferred to other uses and some teachers are not qualified in knowledge. 8. The principal difficulty of cocurricular activities carrying out is lacking of money and qualified instructors. 9. Generally speaking, teachers are always willing to instruct about cocurriculum courses if other things unchanged. Owing to the unadequate interests, specialty and long teaching hours, lower their teaching willingness in co-curricular activities, above all the female teachers. 10. The social resources are not fully used. 11. Half schools don't evaluate the performances of cocurricular activities practicing. And nearly one third of teachers don't test the effectiveness of students learning. According to the conclusions of empirical research, I have some suggestions as follows. 1. Identifing the value and function of cocurricular activities and correcting the misconstruing of administrators and teachers to them. 2. School administrators should inquire the willingness and interests to the extent students and teachers join the cocurricular activities. 3. Any kind of cocurricular activities should be emphasized equally, above all the scientific ones which were ignored seriously now. 4. School administrator should arrange the schedule of cocurricular activities more flexible and increase more hours about them. 5. School administrators should supervise the proceeding of cocurricular activities and ask the teachers to work out curriculum proposal. 6. Education authority schould put the money required by co-curricular activities into the budget list and control the money using by the office of dean of students. 7. Normal schools and colleges can open seminars about cocurricular activities in winter and summer vacations. 8. School administrators should increase payments and decrease teaching hours. 9. Education authority schould ask each school evaluate the performances of cocurricular activities practicing. This work is should done by a team including teachers and students, not only by school administrators.
