As an important node on the ancient Silk Road, China and Kazakhstan have had close trade relations since ancient times. Since China and Kazakhstan formally established diplomatic ties in 1992, the economic and trade exchanges have become more and more frequent. The silk Road Economic Belt initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping during his visit to Kazakhstan in September 2013 and the Bright Road New economic plan proposed by Kazakhstan in 2014 have many similarities, which has laid a solid foundation for bilateral cooperation in terms of policy. Based on the belt and Road Initiative, this paper combines quantitative analysis with qualitative analysis to analyze the trade competitiveness and complementarity between China and Kazakhstan from the aspects of revealed comparative advantage index, trade integration index, export product similarity index and trade competitiveness index. Based on the analysis, specific suggestions are put forward on the problems in bilateral trade between China and Kazakhstan in order to promote the development of bilateral trade under the belt and Road Initiative.
