Following the recent rise in popularity of Mandarin, problems arising from the increasing of demand for Mandarin learning and shortage of language teachers have become acute. The training of local Mandarin teachers has become a matter of great importance to overcome the shortage of qualified teachers in many countries. This study investigates the state of Chinese language teaching and local Mandarin teacher training and its problems in Malaysia, and hence to propose the directions that this training should take, the manner of training, the need for diverse methods and multi-layers of training, and the combination of different types of training.
