So far, there seems to be no academic discussion on the phenomenon of two epitaphs for one person of Sui and Tang Dynasties. Wang Wendu(王文度), a General in early Tang Dynasty, participated in the wars of territorial expansion, earned his own glory during the battles. In 640 and in 655, he asked someone else to write epitaphs for his father Wang Yun(王赟) who died in the year of 615. These epitaphs are precious, as it records the information of Wang's ancestors, the life stories of Wang Yun, Wang Wendu's career and etc. This paper mainly focuses on the issues below: the differences between the life stories of Wang's ancestors written in two epitaphs; Wang Yun's career as an official in Sui Dynasty and his Death in Fangzhou (方州); the details in making the two epitaphs, as well as the reasons for the phenomenon of two epitaphs for one person during Sui and Tang Dynasties.
