This study explored the reason and motivation of non-Chinese parents choosing Chinese primary schools for their children in Malaysia. Results of a questionnaire survey and a focus group interview revealed that the majority of the 269 respondents sent their children to Chinese schools for some purpose. For instance, they are familiar with the Chinese culture, they want to send their children to tuition centres after finishing school to improve their Chinese language skills, they want their children to continue learning Chinese in secondary school and they hope that their children can enter national schools after completing their primary education in Chinese schools.
